Bicentennial of Lafayette’s visit to Beaufort

March 18, 2025 is the bicentennial of Lafayette’s visit to Beaufort during his farewell tour of America. July 4, 2026, is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The museum is hard at work on planning special commemorations of both these historic events.

In the years 1824 and 1825 the Marquis de Lafayette, the last surviving Major General of the American Revolution, visited the U.S. on a farewell tour. A trip scheduled to last a few months stretched into more than a year, during which Lafayette was treated to a hero’s welcome in every state in the Union. On March 18, 1825, Beaufort rolled out its red carpet to celebrate his brief but historic visit here.

To commemorate the bicentennial of that visit, the Museum plans a special exhibit in our newly designed gallery. We will also sponsor the Colonial Ball to be held on the evening of March 18 at Waterfront Park.

Additional information will be forthcoming, so check back soon.
